Thomas Peters was a true Black Loyalist hero. Refusing to accept that Black Loyalists had not been given what they had been promised by the British after coming to Nova Scotia, he raised enough money to book passage to London. There he sought out the leading abolitionists of the day and, with their help, returned to NS and recruited 1,100 Black Loyalists to emigrate to Sierra Leone and found Freetown.
