Requiem for Africville

Africville is an important symbol of African Nova Scotia identity and the struggle against racism. Africville was a Black Nova Scotian community created on the southern shore of the Bedford Basin by former slaves. The people living in Africville were perhaps poor, but many owned their own houses, their church was the heart of the community, and they looked after each other.  In the name of progress and civic betterment this vibrant community was bulldozed by misguided city officials and its residents carted off to public housing. But the strong, tenacious spirit of Africville lives on.
